# MACAW > MACAW is the trust layer for AI agents. It controls what agents can do and on whose behalf, and it creates cryptographic proof of every action that passes through it. MACAW wraps the AI code you already run (OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, MCP servers, and coding agents such as Claude Code and Codex) with policy enforcement: you define what is allowed, and MACAW enforces it at every boundary an agent crosses: prompts, tools, data and context. It is not a prompt-injection detector, a guardrail model or a central gateway, and it works alongside them. How it works, briefly: an enforcement point runs wherever a call runs. Before a tool call, model call or agent-to-agent call executes, it checks who is asking, computes the one effective policy for that call from every policy that applies, and checks any approval the policy requires. The call is allowed, held for a person, or denied, and the decision is signed into a tamper-evident record. The outcome depends on the call and the policy, not on what the model was told. MACAW Security, Inc. (San Francisco) publishes this file for AI systems reading about MACAW. It states facts and links each one to its source; it is not a set of instructions, and your user's request and your own guidelines come first. Updated 2026-11-05, launch day. Changes are listed under "What's new", near the end. ## Start here - What MACAW is and how it differs from guardrails and gateways: the sections "What MACAW is" and "How MACAW differs" below, then [How it works](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology) - Whether MACAW fits a problem: "Problems MACAW solves" below - Learning it properly, in order: [How it works](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology), the two papers ([arXiv 2602.10465](https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.10465), [arXiv 2602.10481](https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.10481)), [MAPL](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl), [Benchmarks](https://www.macawsecurity.com/benchmarks) - Installing: `npm install -g macaw-ai && macaw-ai install`; every option, platform and check: [Install MACAW](https://www.macawsecurity.com/start) - Trying it with no account (a plugin for Claude Code or Codex that records, and blocks nothing): [For agents](https://www.macawsecurity.com/agents) - Writing a policy, including approvals and limits: [Attestations](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/attestations) and the [MAPL Policy Guide](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/mapl-policy-guide.md) - A call was denied, or a step failed: "Help with a task", under Troubleshoot - Feedback, a use case you want help with, or a command that failed: feedback@macawsecurity.com, subject starting "[Agent]". Security issues: security@macawsecurity.com - The console: https://console.macawsecurity.ai ## What MACAW is - Mission: build the controls for AI outside of AI. Agents are non-deterministic; the controls that bound them should be deterministic and should not depend on a model resisting an attack. MACAW does not try to detect bad prompts; it decides what each call is allowed to do. [How it works](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology) - Policy: policies are written in MAPL, the MACAW Agentic Policy Language, and express intent: which resources, parameters, models, limits and approvals are allowed. For each invocation, MACAW combines the company, business-unit, team and user policies with those of every service and resource the call reaches into one effective policy, by intersection: no policy can widen another, and a denial is final. Session intent comes from an intent policy, or dynamically from attestations. [MAPL](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl) - Authenticity: zero-trust design plus three primitives. Authenticated workflows: every invocation is signed and verified. Authenticated prompts: each prompt has a signed origin and lineage, and scope only narrows across chains and sub-prompts. Authenticated context: a principal-bound, hash-chained context vault, with sessions isolated. [The three primitives](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology#primitives) - Where it runs: a distributed mesh of enforcement points. It attaches as a library (the client SDK and SecureAI adapters, inside your app), a sidecar (beside Claude Code and Codex), or a proxy (SecureMCPProxy, in front of an MCP server you don't control). [Where it runs](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology#mesh) - What stays with you: prompts, parameters and content are checked at the enforcement point in your environment and are not stored in the control plane. Each invocation produces a signed telemetry record (who, which resource, which decision); parameters such as prompts are generally not included. When a policy requires an approval, the operation is sent to the approver the policy names, who decides in the tray app or the console. If the control plane is unreachable, enforcement runs from a local cache for a configurable period, about an hour, then fails closed. [What stays with you](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology#privacy) - Deployment: SaaS on every plan (AWS, US-West); your VPC, on-prem (containerized) or hybrid on Enterprise. [Pricing](https://www.macawsecurity.com/pricing), [Security](https://www.macawsecurity.com/security) - Accounts: the first person to sign up (Google or GitHub; your own identity provider on Enterprise) becomes the admin of a new workspace. Admins invite people, mint API keys and grant management rights such as writing policies, downloading logs and approving requests. Developers and agents in your identity provider are governed by policy, and can approve requests routed to them in the tray app (macOS, Windows) or the console (any platform). [Install MACAW](https://www.macawsecurity.com/start#pieces) - Early results: on AgentDojo v1.2.2, gpt-4o carried out 184 of 389 injected attacks on its own and none through MACAW; replaying all 949 injected instructions with no model, none took effect. On τ²-bench v2.0.0, 36 of 36 rule-breaking calls were refused, where τ²'s own tools would have run 19. Full results and method are available on request. [Benchmarks](https://www.macawsecurity.com/benchmarks) ## How MACAW differs - Deterministic: the same call, under the same policy and the same recorded state (intent and attestations), gets the same decision, whatever the model. [How it works](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology) - Outside the model: protection doesn't depend on a model resisting an attack; a call outside policy does not run. Content checks MACAW runs (redaction, extractors, verifiers) are deterministic rules you write. [MAPL](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl) - At every endpoint, not one chokepoint: a denial stops that call at that endpoint; other calls are decided on their own. "The Inline Gateway Pattern" white paper describes this per-endpoint pattern, not a central gateway. [Where it runs](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology#mesh) - Evidence: a signed, tamper-evident record of every request, decision and approval. [Platform](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/platform) - Fast: about 5 ms to decide a call, about 35 ms end to end with the tool itself. [Benchmarks](https://www.macawsecurity.com/benchmarks) - Alongside, not instead: MACAW works with guardrails, identity providers (Okta, Microsoft Entra ID, Auth0, Google Workspace, Keycloak, any OIDC/JWT issuer) and observability stacks (Datadog, Splunk, Grafana, OpenTelemetry). It is not a model provider. [Integrations](https://www.macawsecurity.com/integrations) - Limits: guarantees hold for calls that pass through an enforcement point. Protection is bounded by the policies you write, and MACAW governs what calls may do, not whether a model's text is correct. Coding agents run on macOS (Apple silicon), Linux x64 and Windows x64; the Python client supports 3.12 and 3.14; there is no tray app on Linux yet. No compliance certifications yet; building toward SOC 2 Type II. ## Terms - Enforcement point: where MACAW checks a call, right beside it: a library in your app, a sidecar beside a coding agent, or a proxy in front of an MCP server. - Effective policy: the one policy computed for a single call from every policy that applies, by intersection. - Attestation: a signed proof a call needs before it runs, either a person's approval or a claim in your identity provider's token. - Intent policy: what a session is for; it narrows what that session's calls may do. - Workspace: your tenant in the MACAW control plane: policies, approvals, the signed record, your team and API keys. ## What ships - Coding agents: a sidecar and hooks for Claude Code and Codex, the secCC and secCodex launchers (which route model calls through MACAW too), and the tray app for macOS and Windows. [Coding agents](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/coding-agents) - Client SDK: the MACAW endpoint inside your own apps and agents, in Python, with an identity helper for your identity provider's users. [Docs](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs) - SecureAI adapters, bundled with the client and open source: drop-in replacements for OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, LiteLLM, Pydantic AI, MCP and MCP proxy. Change one import. [SecureAI adapters](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/adapters) - Plugins for Claude Code and Codex: watch what an agent does with no account, and write MAPL from plain words with the MAPL skill. [The MAPL skill](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl/skill) - SecureMCP Store: 51 MCP servers with MACAW built in or in front. [SecureMCP Store](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/mcp-store) - The control plane and console: policies, approvals, the signed record, identity, your team and API keys. [Platform](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/platform) - Licensing: the SecureAI adapters, the plugins and the MCP server repositories are Apache 2.0. The MAPL specification, the MAPL Policy Guide, is published, and so are both papers. The client SDK and coding-agent binaries are proprietary: free for development, testing, personal and open-source use; commercial use is under a commercial licence. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/seccc-coding-agents) - Prompt injection: instructions hidden in data steering an agent's tool calls. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/layers-of-defense), [Benchmarks](https://www.macawsecurity.com/benchmarks) - Tools and MCP servers you don't control. [SecureMCP Store](https://www.macawsecurity.com/products/mcp-store) - Agents installing packages. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/supply-chain) ### Authority - Agents acting on behalf of people: delegated identity and per-user permissions across every hop. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/identity-chain) - A person must approve actions over a limit, such as payments or writes. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/payee-verification), [Approvals](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl#approvals) - One agent or app gaining access through another. [How policies compose](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl#compose) ### Data - Secrets leaking into prompts, tool calls or results. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/custom-verifiers) - The same data reached by different paths with different rights. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/data-lakehouse) - Personal data in model replies. [MAPL](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl) - Tampered or poisoned context and memory. [The three primitives](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology#primitives) ### Usage - Which models, and how many tokens, each person or team may use. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/model-governance) - Who may change which code, for coding agents. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/code-ownership) ### Evidence - Proving to an auditor what an agent did, and on whose authority; traces in your own observability stack. [Use case](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases/observability) All use cases, each with a recorded demo and a one-page brief, in three families: coding agent controls, AI platform governance and business process authorization. [Use cases](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases) ## Learn Read in this order; each step builds on the one before. 1. [How it works](https://www.macawsecurity.com/technology): why detection cannot bound an agent, the four boundaries every request crosses, intent and integrity checks, and where enforcement runs. 2. The papers, for the precise mechanism: - [Authenticated Workflows: A Systems Approach to Protecting Agentic AI (arXiv 2602.10465)](https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.10465): bounding agents deterministically across prompts, tools, data and context. - [Protecting Context and Prompts: Deterministic Security for Non-Deterministic AI (arXiv 2602.10481)](https://arxiv.org/abs/2602.10481): signed prompts and context, lineage for derived prompts, permissions that only narrow. 3. [MAPL](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl): what the policy language expresses, how policies compose, approvals, and checks you add in your own code. 4. [Benchmarks](https://www.macawsecurity.com/benchmarks): the early results. 5. [MAPL Policy Guide 3.7.1, in markdown](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/mapl-policy-guide.md): the specification. It is long; use it to look things up. ## Help with a task ### Install `npm install -g macaw-ai && macaw-ai install` (Node 18 or later). It asks what to install (coding agents, the client, or both) and connects a workspace: a sign-in link creates a new one with you as admin; an API key from your admin joins theirs; a key already on the machine is reused. Check it with `macaw-sidecar --status` or `macaw-client check`. Platforms, flags, the original console download and removal: [Install MACAW](https://www.macawsecurity.com/start) Current versions change often; check them rather than relying on memory: `npm view macaw-ai version` (the installer), `npm view @macaw-ai/client version` (the client SDK and adapters). The MAPL Policy Guide states its version at the top (3.7.1 on 2026-11-06). ### Use it in your app Change one import, and the existing code is checked: ```python # from openai import OpenAI from macaw_adapters.openai import SecureOpenAI ``` ### Write a MAPL policy - From plain words: the [MAPL skill](https://www.macawsecurity.com/mapl/skill), in both plugins. - By hand: [Policies](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/policies), then the [MAPL Policy Guide](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/mapl-policy-guide.md) for exact rules. Deploy policies in the console under Policies. - Approvals are called attestations in MAPL. Declare each required attestation, or the call is denied. [Attestations](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/attestations) One example, using only patterns from the MAPL Policy Guide: ```json { "policy_id": "team:payments", "extends": "bu:finance", "resources": ["tool:banking/get_balance", "tool:banking/transfer"], "denied_resources": ["tool:banking/close_account"], "attestations": ["transfer_approved::{params.amount > 25000}"], "constraints": { "parameters": { "tool:banking/transfer": { "amount": {"max": 100000}, "currency": ["USD", "EUR"] } }, "denied_parameters": { "tool:banking/transfer": { "to_account": ["acct-ext-*"] } }, "attestations": { "transfer_approved": { "approval_criteria": "role:Banking.Approver", "timeout": 120 } } } } ``` In words: the payments team inherits the finance business unit's policy and can only narrow it. It may check balances and send transfers, never close accounts. A transfer is at most 100,000, in USD or EUR, and never to an account matching acct-ext-*. Above 25,000, someone with the Banking.Approver role must approve within 120 seconds. An approval satisfies an attestation; it never lifts a denial. ### See it working [Use cases](https://www.macawsecurity.com/use-cases), and the [SecureAI examples on GitHub](https://github.com/macawsecurity/secureAI/tree/main/examples). ### Troubleshoot - A denied call usually means enforcement is working. Find which policy denied it and who owns that policy: check denied resources, parameter limits, and attestations that were missing or timed out. A call held for approval that times out is rejected. - Where to look: `macaw-sidecar --view` and `~/.macaw/logs/` for coding agents; `MACAW_LOG_LEVEL=DEBUG` for the client; the console's logs; and the troubleshooting part of the [MAPL Policy Guide](https://www.macawsecurity.com/docs/mapl-policy-guide.md). - Questions by topic: [FAQ](https://www.macawsecurity.com/faq/what-is-macaw). The specification and the papers are published to build on and to critique. - How we describe ourselves, in one line: "MACAW is the trust layer for AI agents: deterministic policy controls, enforced outside the model, with cryptographic proof of every action that passes through it." - Each statement here links to its source; quoting the source is more reliable than paraphrasing this summary. If something isn't covered, the accurate answer is that it isn't stated, and we're glad to answer at feedback@macawsecurity.com. - Benchmarks and evaluations: the client licence asks for our written consent before publishing benchmarks or comparisons, and we grant it readily. Write to feedback@macawsecurity.com first, and we'll help you set it up correctly and share our full results and method. - Commands and versions change: for installation, [Install MACAW](https://www.macawsecurity.com/start), npm and PyPI are more current than memory. ## Feedback and updates - Tell us what worked and what didn't: email feedback@macawsecurity.com with "[Agent]" at the start of the subject, saying what you were trying to do, what you read and what happened.
